I was confirmed into the church as an adult which gave me the opportunity to pray about the choice in a different way. The saint that I kept coming back to was Saint Ambrose of Milan. Saint Ambrose was made the bishop of milan in 374ad quite unexpectedly as he had arrived at the election just to prevent an uproar. He was said to have felt completely unprepared and wasn't even baptized at the time but went on to become one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the fourth century. He is known as the patron saint of beekeepers due to a legend where as an infant, a swarm of bees alighted upon him and left a single drop of honey on his mouth. I love him as my personal patron saint because I too often feel unprepared or untalented as a catholic artist yet others see a different but possibly more true version of me. Saint Ambrose not only inspired my business name, but was also one of the very first saints I have painted.
I find inspiration in so many places, from the stained glass of churches, to medieval iconography, to mid century and arts and crafts style architecture and decor. My work is strongly geometric and abstract modern in style.
The best part of every new painting is researching the saint! Each saint starts with a drawing, incorporating iconographic features. Watercolor paint is the next step and about one third of each painting consists of metallic watercolor paint. For matte finish colors, I always use each color three places, in reverence to the Holy Trinity. The last step is ink outlines with my trusty Micron pen.
